Rehmannia Six Combination is one of the most important and commonly used Yin Essence (Jing) tonics. It builds Yin Jing. It is a superb tonic for maintenance of Yin Essence in older men and women. Rehmannia Six has a broad range of applications.
Steamed Rehmannia is the leading herb in this formula. It is a warm, moist, Yin Kidney and Blood tonic. Its heaviness helps constrain uncontrolled Yang. Rehmannia strengthens the lower back, nourishes the brain and bone marrow, and benefits hearing. Rehmannia, Dioscorea and Poria have a regulating effect on blood sugar levels. These three herbs have a strengthening effect on the body and spirit. Rehmannia, Dioscorea and Cornus help to restore hearing, and supplements deficiency that causes ringing in the ears (tinnitus). In men, Rehmannia and Dioscorea help to increase sperm production, and Cornus and Dioscorea lock the sperm and help to prevent premature ejaculation.
Rehmannia, Cornus and Moutan all supplement the Liver's Essence helping to build Liver Yin. Rehmannia and Poria have a tonifying and calming effect on the Heart. Dioscorea and Poria strengthen the Spleen's digestive function, aiding nutrient absorption. Dioscorea, Poria and Alisma help to prevent the steamed Rehmannia from being too slippery.
Moutan has strong blood modulating properties, cooling, invigorating, and relieving blood stagnancy. Moutan counters the warming qualities of Cornus. Cornus bark tonifies sexual functions and libido in both men and women.
Cornus astringes and locks Essence into the Kidney, preventing the leaking of Jing and solidifying the actions of the other herbs. Alisma, Poria and Cornus are diuretics even though Cornus is classified as an astringent. Cornus has a regulatory effect on the renal function and helps to clear excess water from the system without causing urinary frequency. Alisma and Poria act to clear dampness and dispel heat.
A special note: Individuals with weak digestive function, especially those prone to loose stool, should take a Spleen Qi tonic to help with the digestion of Rehmannia Six.
